Maternal Stress
Black mothers are at risk of experiencing multiple socioeconomic factors that contribute to poor birth outcomes. It is important to highlight the burden maternal stress puts on the bodies of Black birthing people. Maternal stress can be manifested and exacerbated through Interpersonal Violence (IPV), financial difficulties, housing instability, and food insecurity. According to the USDA, in 2021, it is estimated that Black people are almost three times as likely to experience hunger than White individuals. Lastly, it has been noted that in San Francisco, Black residents make up 38% of the city’s homeless population, even though they account for less than 6% of the city’s residents.
